Get the deep purple look…

I was recently inspired by Tilly Devines choice of lip colour in the new Underbelly Razor, deep purples and deep reds applied in the style of the time. Being a red girl myself I thought I would venture out of my fashion shell and go for a deep purple.

Now to let you in on some news, I have NEVER worn a colour like this before, sure I have applied it to many people but, never on myself! I have always really stuck to what I know works best for me, scared of making a big makeup blunder. Knowing this about myself I really did not want to spend a lot of money on a lipstick that I may never wear again and one that just might sit at the bottom of my makeup bag for all eternity.

We recently had the chance to try out a couple of the new Kate Moss Lasting Finish lipstick for Rimmel London, which were pretty impressive. I knew there was a deep purple lipstick in the collection (number 11) so I headed out to Priceline to grab mine, and lucky I left when I did because there where only two left in the display! Other Tilly Devine makeup stalkers like me perhaps?

I applied the colour as soon as I got home, anxious to see if I could pull it off. Sadly, I don’t think I did, the colour itself though is Devine (pun intended, ha). It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I have never worn a colour like this on myself before, I am sure if I continue to wear it I will get used to it. I hope so because I just adore this look so much. Maybe I will wear it out at night first to ease my way into it.

When applying a lipstick colour like this one always go slowly, one little mistake is so noticeable and not always easy to remove. Stay inside your natural lip first and then decide if you want to take it a bit fuller. The great thing about a colour like this one is it will stand out and make a statement so make sure your eyeshadow is not that out there or you could end up looking like a scary clown.

RRP: $11.95, available from Priceline, Kmart, Target, Big W, Coles supermarkets & selected pharmacies.

Want to Get the London look?

Last Wednesday night we were lucky enough to attend a Rimmel London event to celebrate Kate Moss 10 year collaboration with the brand, I really cannot believe it has been 10 years! The one advert that always comes to my mind when I think of Kate Moss and Rimmel is the one for Volume Flash Mascara where she rides a motor bike through the streets of London. Rimmel always comes up with such great ads to sell their products and you can never forget the catch phase “Get the London Look”. We had such a great night celebrating (and maybe drinking a few delish cocktails, Vodka and Blueberries anyone?) we wanted to share a few pics from the night.

Now it wasnt all fun and games, we were also there to get a sneak peek at Kate Moss first ever signature lipstick collection created by Kate herself for Rimmel. The collection appropriately named The Kate Collection contains 7 shades varying from bright pinks, reds, coral and nudes, you are bound to find one that suits your skin tone and attitude.

After the event we were excited to take home a Rimmel London pack containing one of Kate’s Lasting Finish lipsticks.

The lipstick we received was number 11, a deep red (you cannot imagine how happy I was to get the red colour, I can’t get enough of red lippy). The lipsticks glides on well and the colour pops straight away, it is a very rich red and is a great colour to wear out during the day or night. Sometimes I find with certain brands of lipstick the colour that comes out on your lips is not always the same as it looks in the stick. The colour lasted well, after eating lunch it was still as bright as ever. I didn’t really need to apply for about 2 hours, by that time my lips did feel slightly dry.

In our awesome goodie bag we also received the Extra Wow Lash mascara in Extreme Black. I have to say this mascara is pretty god dam amazing, it is lash building and really defines your lashes making them fuller and longer. The brush  is oversized making it easy to create volume, you can apply 1-2 coats for a soft look or by applying 3 or more you achieve a dramatic look great for hitting up some friday night cocktails.

Kate Moss Vintage Muse perfume was also included, a floral musk scent that really lingers on your skin. Vintage Muse contains plum, rhubarb and black currant creme as its head. Peony, tiger orchid and purple violet as its heart and ambergris, white musk and a touch of chocolate for its base. All in all such a beautiful mix of ingredients, making this perfume delicious, not to mention the deep amethyst colour and design of the bottle. Breathtaking!

Check out the Rimmel London Australia website for all their other amazing products. They have such a great variety of makeup from polishes, lip gloss, lip stick, foundation everything you could possibly need.

Our Favourites….in September

There’s lots of things we can’t live without but we couldn’t possible use them everyday. But here are a few of the things that we must and have used everyday in September.

Burts Bees Tinted Lip balm in Hibiscus (official Liptember Lippy) It goes without saying that we use this everyday, after all it is Liptember! It goes on nice and smooth and lasts on your lips for ages. It is only slightly tinted, just enough colour to make me feel like i don’t have a naked face. Oh and it also keeps my lips nice and soft and moisturised. Read about Liptember

David Jones Ultra Mascara in Black. I picked this up one day when I was trying to find a birthday present (i don’t think i did get that present) and I love it. The package says it’s volumising and lengthening but I’m not sure it does both. It smooths on my lashes easily and makes them look longer. I wear it everyday because it makes me feel like I’m ready for anything and it easily removes with warm water. RRP $14.95 from David Jones.

Eco Tan – Tan Away Glove. Now, one of us is not as keen as the other about self tanning. Honestly I just cant be bothered sometimes but I do like to have fresh glowing skin. So from the day I put my Tan Away glove in the shower not a week has passed without using it. I usually use it every 3rd day or so all over my body with my favourite body wash, followed by a lathering of moisturiser and my skin is feeling soft and silky. Click here to read the post

Mac Face and Body. Perfect for everyday or a night out on the town. Goes on nice and smooth and builds for more coverage (when I’m having bad skin days). I usually wear it how it comes for that dewy look but if I’m going out at night I will use a powder over it for staying power and a smooth matt finish. Read our post

Hot Tip…Big lips without the Collagen!

Do you have a small top lip like yours truly? Well I think I have the solution to all our woes, and it doesn’t involve a trip to the local botox administrator for a jab or two. It is a much cheaper and less painful option then surgery, and looks a million times better.  In fact you can achieve the big upper lip we all crave from three makeup products you probably already have in your makeup kit; a lip pencil, red lip gloss and a gold eye shadow or shimmer. Can you see where I am going with this? If not or even if you are a smarty pants you should keep reading and see how this at home miracle is preformed.

At first we need a before shot so you can all witness the small lip in question.

First step is to outline your lips with a lip pencil, to make them bigger you can outline just above your natural lip. I always fill in my lips with the lip liner as well, it helps your lips stick or gloss stay longer and you always have a bit of colour in case you do not get a chance to re apply.

Next step is to apply your favorite red lip gloss over the top. You might remember in a previous post I spoke about my fav Napoleon Perdis St John lip gloss, I am flaunting it below just in case you may have forgotten (Oh for shame).

Now for the all important step, the one that is going to make us look like Angelina (apologizes, I am not entirely sure if that is a good comparison, think of your most desired lip and that is what we shall base it on.) Pat your index finger into your gold eye shadow or shimmer pot so you get a good amount on your finger. Now dab it over your lip gloss in the middle of your upper lip, make sure you do not go all the way along your lip as it will not achieve the look we are after. The gold should blend into the lip gloss and reflex off the light, making your lip look fuller and extremely kissable.

This is a little trick we have picked up along the way and have since discovered it is used quiet a lot on the runway!

RRP: Napoleon Perdis St John Lip gloss $22. Available from Napoleon Perdis concept stores.

Vintage Red Lips

Red lips are quite the fashion at the moment, it is a trend that we at The Makeup Case, have certainly embraced. So when I found these great vintage ads I had to share them with you. What a better way to start a Monday then with some lovely pictures. You can see that red lips are certainly not the new kid on the block, these ads date back to 1940’s!

1940’s

 1950’s

1960’s

1980’s

1990’s

Going by all these beautiful advertisements it looks like red is a colour that’s going to be on our lips for years to come. We at The Makeup Case don’t think that is a bad thing at all, in fact we think it’s fantastic! Red lips are by far one of our most favorite thing (sorry Oprah for borrowing your line, please don’t sue us!).

Liptember….its Movember for Ladies

We don’t need a reason to buy any kind of beauty product, but when we discovered Liptember there was definitely a good reason. So everyone knows about Movember (all those hairy upper lips are so hip) well this is the ladies version of that (without the excess hair). In a nut shell we get to buy a special Liptembe Lippy and have to wear it everyday in September while raising funds for the Centre for Womans Mental Health and Lifeline.

Liptember was first launched in 2010 and was a great success. Over $55.000 was raised for the Centre for Womens Mental Health, the first genderspecific mental health clinic in Australia. This year Liptember have formed an important partnership with health beneficiaries the Centre For Women’s Mental Health, who provide national research and programs for gender specific mental health issues for women and Lifeline Australia, a 24 hour crisis support service connecting Australians with trained volunteers who can provide emotional support to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

We have told you previously about how great Burts Bees is so we couldn’t contain ourselves when we found out the official Liptember Lippy is Burt’s Bees Tinted Lipbalm in HIBISCUS! Can’t wait to get one and start the challenge.

If you want to find out more or sponsor us head to Liptember.

RRP$10. Burt’s Bees Liptember Lippy is available at Myer (make sure you buy it from the special box on the counter so a portion of the sale is donated)

Delicious (Black) Honey Lips

The first time I saw this lipstick was at a Clinique new season launch years ago at David Jones in Sydney. They kept saying that it was a great colour for all occasions and with almost any outfit. Looking at the lipstick, i thought ‘are they kidding? It looks like a staple in a makeup bag for one of those EMO kids!’ But then…..the makeup artist  used it on one of the models and right before my eyes its magic was revealed.

Its called Almost Lipstick SPF15, the colour, Black Honey. It is a sheer, glossy, lightweight lip colour and the shade, Black Honey, is exclusive to Clinique.  They say it is ‘universally flattering yet looks a little different on everyone’ and I tend to agree. I use this lipstick for nearly every bride we do makeup for and gives that ‘kiss me’ look.

It’s a really deep dark red colour in the tube but when applied it goes on sheer and it seems to just enhance your natural lip colour. It’s emollient-rich formula goes on nice and smooth, like a babies bottom, and  gives lips a sleek, moist finish. It ‘s also SPF 15 so it will protect your lips from the harsh Australian sun while you’re sipping bubbles at the Spring Carnival.

So why not head to your nearest Clinique counter and check it out or online at Clinique.

RRP $36. Available at Myer, David Jones and Clinique counters.

Lets get together and paint the town red..and maybe a bit of sparkle as well.

As makeup students we were told that the hardest technique to perfect is applying the perfect red lip. We were often subjected to applying a red lip on a fellow student over and over again until we got it right. You would think by doing this I would lose all my love for the lady in red but NO, I still hold her near and dear to my heart and can often be found sporting her wild tones. I know there are a lot of girls out there that are still a little afraid to wear a red lip but there is really nothing to be afraid of. And a major plus of wearing red lips is that it makes your teeth look super white!

On a recent shopping trip I noticed a sales assistant with a particularly beautiful colour red on her lips, when I asked her what it was I was truly amazed…SPORTSGIRL.  I went in and bought the lipstick as soon as I could, and smiled when I read what she was called ‘Fashionista’.

Fashonista is packaged in a stylish black lipstick canister with a pretty pink heart on the lid that reads ‘Pout about it”. It has a fun girly feel that I love and now I want to have one in every colour. Fashionista is a beautiful deep red that compliments every skin tone; it glides on perfectly and leaves your lips feeling smooth and moisturized.

Fashionista

The funny thing about this lipstick is that it does not state that it is long lasting but stayed on my pout for hours without the need to reapply. Fashionista is perfect lipstick to wear on its own, although when I am hitting the town I do like to glide some Napoleon ‘St John’ lip gloss over the top to add some extra sparkle.

Fashionista and St John Lip Gloss

RRP: Sportsgirl Fashionista lipstick $9 (how great is that?!?) available from Sportsgirl stores. Napoleon Perdis St John Lip gloss $22 available from Napoleon Perdis concept stores.

My lips are buzzing to the sound of Burt’s Bees.

A couple of presents my not so good friend winter has brought me this season; the flu, a constant runny nose and dry lips. Although I am unable to return two of winter’s unwanted gifts, I can get rid of one…dry lips and its all thanks to Burt’s Bees Nourishing Lip Balm.

No matter what I tried on my lips this season nothing seemed to work. They all felt great when I first applied them but did nothing to actually fix the problem. I was complaining about the whole horrid affair my lips have been giving me while on a recent lunch outing with a good friend of mine. She suggested I give Bert’s Bees a try; she had been using it for a while and cannot get enough of it.

Then just like a lightning bolt I ran into David Jones and scoured the aisle for the miracle product. There were so many options in the range to choose from I felt like a kid in a candy store. I settled for the Mango Butter Lip Balm for two reasons a) Because I love Mangos so why the hell not and b) With all the rain outside I thought it would remind me of summer. And I tell you the Mango flavour did not disappoint, as soon as I opened the lid I could smell summer. With images of sitting on a tropical beach and sipping mango daiquiri’s swirling around in my head I forgot all about the gloomy winter gifts thrust upon me and enjoyed the moment.

Since using Bert’s Bees Lip Balm my lips are so much softer with no signs of dryness. It must be the incredible formula in Burt’s Bees Nourishing Lip Balm that heals, soothes, softens and moisturizes which makes this product so amazing. I now make sure I have one of these miracle sticks in my bag at all times. You never know when your lips my need hydrating.

Look at all the other amazing natural products Burt’s Bees has to offer.

RRP: $6.95 from David Jones, Terry White Chemists and selected retail outlets
